Folklore

Folklore is an umbrella term that encompasses various forms of expressive culture, including myths, legends, tales, oral history, proverbs, jokes, rituals, customs, and other traditional practices shared within a specific group or community. Originating from oral tradition and often passed down through generations by word of mouth, folklore is an integral part of every human society, playing an important role in conveying history, morality, belief systems, and cultural identity.

Rooted in the ‘folk’, meaning the common people, the term ‘folklore’ was coined by English antiquarian William Thoms in 1846. It was initially used to denote the traditions and culture of rural or peasant classes in Europe. However, the scope of folklore has since expanded to include any shared tradition or lore of a group, regardless of geographical location, community size, or level of sociocultural complexity. Folklore can take on various forms, including verbal, material, and customary. Verbal folklore consists of spoken words and stories. This can include myths, legends, fairy tales, jokes, proverbs, riddles, ballads, and oral history. These stories and texts often impart culturally-specific life lessons, historical narratives, or moral values.

Material folklore, on the other hand, consists of tangible objects like handicrafts, clothing, culinary traditions, architectural styles, and artworks. These artefacts are usually created following traditional techniques and styles, often carrying symbolic meanings or stories related to the history, geography, or belief systems of the community.

Customary folklore includes communal practices, rituals, dances, music, festivals, and other social or ceremonial events.
